The tech world thrives on innovation, and innovation thrives on diversity—especially neurodiversity. At Florida Drupalcamp 2025, I had the opportunity to share insights on neurodivergence, how it intersects with technology, and why inclusive spaces matter.

What is Neurodiversity?

Neurodiversity recognizes that people think, learn, and interact with the world in different ways. There is no single “right” way to experience life, and neurodivergent individuals—those with autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and other cognitive variations—bring immense value to our communities.

Despite this, employment disparities are striking:

     •           30–40% of neurodivergent adults are unemployed.

     •           85% of autistic individuals in the U.S. are jobless—compared to 4.2% of the general population.

These statistics highlight the urgent need for more inclusive workplaces, particularly in tech, where problem-solving and out-of-the-box thinking are prized.

Tech, Inclusion, and the Drupal Community

The open-source world has long been a space where different perspectives drive creativity. However, the way we design, communicate, and collaborate can either support or exclude neurodivergent individuals.

At DrupalCamp, we explored several key topics:

1. Masking & Self-Advocacy

Neurodivergent individuals often feel pressure to “mask” their differences—hiding traits to fit in. This can be exhausting and lead to burnout. Instead, companies should foster environments where self-advocacy is encouraged and where neurodivergent employees can comfortably ask for what they need.

What did we learn: Normalize conversations around accommodations and strengths-based leadership.

2. Time Blindness & Structure in Digital Workflows

Many neurodivergent people struggle with time perception—a concept known as time blindness. Missing deadlines or struggling with task transitions isn’t about laziness; it’s about needing better time-management structures.

Tech solutions can help:

     •           Digital calendars & reminders

     •           Clear, structured project timelines

     •           Asynchronous communication options

What did we learn: Simple adjustments can enhance productivity and reduce stress for neurodivergent team members.

3. Sensory Sensitivity & Digital Accessibility

Many neurodivergent people experience heightened sensory processing challenges. This can impact:

     •           Reading comprehension (due to busy, high-contrast web designs)

     •           Video & audio content (when autoplay or background noise is overwhelming)

     •           Physical workspaces (lighting, sound, and open-office distractions)

What did we learn: Accessible design isn’t just about physical disabilities—it also supports cognitive and sensory needs.

4. Neurodivergent Strengths: Innovation & Problem-Solving

Neurodivergent minds thrive on complexity. Many excel in pattern recognition, deep focus, and creative problem-solving—all valuable in tech.

Yet, traditional hiring processes often filter out neurodivergent talent due to rigid interview structures. Companies should explore:

·       Skills-based hiring over traditional interviews

·       Trial projects to assess real-world problem-solving

·       Structured communication to reduce ambiguity

What did we learn: By shifting hiring mindsets, we unlock untapped talent and drive innovation.

Building a More Neuro-Inclusive Future

The Drupal community has long championed openness and inclusivity. We now have an opportunity to lead in neurodiversity inclusion—by designing digital spaces, hiring practices, and workflows that empower all kinds of thinkers.

What can we do next?

·       Promote neurodiversity-friendly hiring

·       Implement flexible, accessible digital workflows

·       Foster neuro-affirming cultures where people don’t have to “mask” who they are

At DrupalCamp FL 2025, we planted the seeds for these discussions. Now, it’s time to put them into action. My slides are from the event are attached to this post. I’d love to continue the conversation!
